A growing number of counterfeit IDs are becoming harder to detect, and law enforcement agencies across the United States are starting to see the impact.
According to a recent report from abc27 News in Pennsylvania, police in Pittsburgh have confiscated more than 200 fake IDs since June 2025. Officers say the increase is largely driven by advances in technology used to produce counterfeit identification.
Security expert John Sancenito explained that modern fake IDs are now being produced with more advanced tools.
“The newer fakes now are using AI technology and other advanced methods to encode the barcode so it reads and matches what appears on the front of the card.”
In many cases, these counterfeit IDs scan correctly and appear legitimate to businesses relying on basic verification tools.
Why Fake IDs Are Becoming Harder to Spot
For years, most businesses relied on a few simple verification steps:
- scanning the barcode on the back of the ID
- checking holograms or UV features
- visually comparing the photo and birth date
But counterfeit producers are now replicating those same security features.
Many modern fake IDs today can:
- contain working barcodes
- match the printed information on the card
- pass UV light checks
- closely resemble legitimate government IDs
Because of this, even experienced staff may struggle to identify counterfeit IDs during busy entry periods.
The Technology Gap Between Law Enforcement and Businesses
Another issue highlighted in the abc27 report is the difference between the tools available to police and those used by businesses.
Lt. Kyle Hower from the New York City Police Department noted that bars and restaurants often do not have the same technology law enforcement uses to analyze suspicious IDs.
Basic scanners simply read the barcode. They confirm that data exists inside the code but do not verify whether the information was legitimately issued.
This gap allows many counterfeit IDs to pass through standard checks.
The Real Risk for Bars and Retailers
When a fake ID is accepted, the consequences can extend far beyond a single sale.
Businesses may face:
- fines for serving minors
- liquor license suspension
- increased insurance costs
- legal liability after an incident
Even one compliance violation can create significant financial risk.
Why Modern ID Verification Is Changing
Because counterfeit IDs are becoming more sophisticated, businesses are beginning to adopt more advanced verification technology.
Instead of simply scanning the barcode, modern systems analyze multiple layers of the ID, including:
- barcode structure validation
- document layout verification
- optical character recognition comparison
- cross-field data consistency checks
This approach shifts ID verification from simple scanning to full authentication.
Closing
The rise in counterfeit IDs reported by police in Pennsylvania reflects a broader trend across the country.
As technology improves, fake IDs are becoming easier to produce and harder to detect using traditional methods.
For businesses operating in regulated industries, accurate ID verification is no longer just a compliance requirement. It is a critical part of protecting licenses, reducing liability, and maintaining safe environments for customers.
